Organic Chemistry

This is an advanced course in the study of carbon-containing compounds. The first half of the course emphasizes various functional groups, their nomenclature and common reactions. An introduction to reaction mechanisms, synthesis, and stereochemistry are also included. The second half of the course will focus on organic compounds found in living organisms, including proteins, carbohydrates, lipids, and nucleic acids. A course for the serious student who is interested in pursuing a major in the sciences at the undergraduate level. An online lab is included. Homework will average 3 - 5 hours per week.

Minimum age of 15 on the first day of class. Successful completion of VSA Chemistry or comparable course in the previous 24 months is strongly encouraged.
