Composition I
Using curriculum developed by VSA and the WORLD News Group, students in Composition I will learn to handle longer writing assignments including a multi-paragraph description, a persuasive essay analyzing two sides of an issue, a biographical essay, a fictional narrative, and a short story. Evaluation will focus on the development of ideas/content, organization, voice, word choice, sentence fluency, conventions, and presentation. Individual work will be shared frequently in class for discussion. Some basic review of grammar is included, but mastery of basic sentence structure, punctuation, and capitalization is expected for this class. Students who need more work on grammar and/or who are not comfortable writing a 5-paragraph essay on a familiar subject should consider Grammar and Writing Transition before this class is taken. Homework will average 3 - 4 hours per week.

Prerequisites
Minimum age of 12 on the first day of class. Successful completion of VSA Grammar and Writing 6, VSA Grammar and Writing Transition, or a comparable course during the previous 24 months strongly encouraged.
