German I

More citizens of the EU speak German than any other language! For centuries, it has been one of the key languages of academic scholarship, particularly in the fields of science and theology. It has a rich literary history, encompassing hundreds of novelists, playwrights, and poets. German I will introduce the student to the basics of German grammar and vocabulary. Learning the grammar of a foreign language also provides insight into English grammar, and the universal categories of grammar. In addition to the instructional text, students will quickly be introduced to real German texts including the Luther Bible, fairy tales, and contemporary, popular music. The class will also use online, self-paced learning tools and drill vocabulary. Homework will average 3 - 4 hours per week.
